Safer and more relaxed on the road – thanks to modern technology that watches along with you
Your car nowadays is more than just four wheels and an engine. Modern cars are full of smart systems that help you drive, warn you of danger and sometimes even intervene when necessary. ADAS – Advanced Driver Assistance Systems – are those invisible helpers that ensure you arrive at your destination more safely. At Autobest, we know exactly how these systems work and ensure they always function optimally.
ADAS is a collective name for all smart driving assistance systems in your car. Think of parking assistance, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and emergency braking systems. These technologies use cameras, radar sensors and smart software to analyze traffic situations and help you – or your car – make the right decisions. Whether you're reversing into a parking space, driving on the highway or navigating through the city: ADAS systems are constantly watching along with you.
Virtually every modern car nowadays has several of these systems on board. And that's a good thing, because research shows they significantly reduce the number of accidents. At Autobest, our mechanics have received special Bosch training to understand, maintain and calibrate these systems where necessary.
We all know the familiar beep that gets faster as you get closer to an obstacle. That's the classic, passive parking assistance. But modern cars go a step further. Smart parking systems can maneuver your car into a parking space autonomously – you only need to follow the instructions on the screen and possibly operate the accelerator and brake. Some systems even do that for you.
The great thing about this technology? You prevent expensive damage and parking stress. The disadvantage? If the cameras or sensors don't function properly, the system won't work optimally. That's why at Autobest we always check whether your parking assistance works correctly and whether all sensors are clean and properly calibrated.
Many motorists think that ADAS work 'automatically', but these systems also need maintenance. The most important thing? Make sure your cameras and radar sensors stay clean. A simple car wash can make all the difference. If there's dirt, snow or insects in front of the sensors, your car literally can't 'see' what's happening anymore. Compare it to dirty glasses – you also see less sharply then.
But there's more. After a collision, replacing a windscreen or even hitting a bollard, the cameras and sensors can become miscalibrated. The 'field of vision' of your car then changes, causing systems such as lane keeping assist or emergency braking to no longer work reliably. This can create dangerous situations.
At Autobest we can recalibrate ADAS systems. We have the right Bosch equipment and expertise to ensure that all cameras and sensors are perfectly adjusted again. This way you know for sure that your car is fully watching along with you again.
Fun fact: some modern cars keep their reversing camera clean independently with a jet of windscreen washer fluid and an air stream. Handy in the Dutch autumn!
Adaptive cruise control – or speed assistance – is a lot smarter than the classic cruise control from your old car. This system not only monitors the speed you set, but also the traffic around you. Your car automatically maintains distance to the car in front of you: if it brakes, you brake too. When traffic picks up again, your car follows automatically.
Many systems are also linked to a camera that can read traffic signs. See a sign with 80 km/h? Then your car automatically adjusts the speed. Ideal for long journeys and traffic jams – you arrive much more relaxed.
A moment's inattention and you drift towards the hard shoulder or the central reservation. Lane keeping assist prevents that. This system warns you when you leave the lane without indicating. Some cars go a step further and gently steer to keep you between the lines.
There are two variants: a warning system (vibrations in the steering wheel or a beep) and an active assistance system that corrects the car itself. Both significantly increase road safety, especially on long highway journeys where concentration lapses momentarily.
The emergency braking system – also called Autonomous Emergency Braking – is perhaps the most important ADAS system. It detects pedestrians, cyclists or cars that suddenly appear in front of you and brakes automatically if you don't (quickly enough). This can prevent serious collisions.
There's also help when reversing: Rear Collision Warning warns you of crossing traffic behind your car. Are you reversing out of a parking space and a cyclist you don't see is approaching? Then the system intervenes. Convenient, safe and proven effective in practice.
At Autobest, we're happy to check whether all your driving assistance systems are still working correctly. Whether you want to have the calibration checked after a collision, notice that a system is no longer responding properly, or just want certainty: our mechanics are ready for you. We work with Bosch equipment and follow all factory specifications.
Doubting whether your ADAS are working properly? Schedule an appointment via our website or call us at 0499 - 390 475. We take the time to check your systems and explain what may be necessary. So you can get back on the road carefree and safely.
