The best tire doesn't exist – but the right tire does

Many motorists think that the most expensive tire is automatically the best. But that's not true. How well a tire performs depends on the right size, the right profile and the right wheel combination prescribed by the car manufacturer. Every car is equipped from the factory with a tire-wheel combination that is optimally matched to the driving characteristics of that specific model.

Does your tire size deviate too much from factory specifications? Then you'll notice it in driving behavior: less comfort, more wear and in extreme cases even safety problems. At Autobest, we therefore always strictly adhere to the prescribed sizes and specifications.

Wide, wider, widest: pay attention to specifications

Wide wheels and low, wide tires look sporty. More and more motorists therefore choose wider wheels and tires when they want to give their car a tougher appearance. But it's not as simple as it seems.

The width of the tread must be in the right proportion to the height of the sidewall (the 'cheek' of the tire). Also, the ET value or 'offset' – the distance from the center of the wheel to the contact surface with the wheel hub – may not deviate from the factory specification. If these proportions are incorrect, it has direct consequences:

• Worse driving characteristics and less grip
• Uneven tire wear
• More rolling resistance and higher fuel consumption
• Risk of tire rubbing against wheel arches
• In extreme cases: danger to road safety

Summer, winter and all-season tires

Which tires you need depends on the season and your driving behavior:

Summer tires
Optimal grip at temperatures above 7 degrees. Harder rubber, shorter braking distance on dry and wet road surfaces in summer.

Winter tires
Softer rubber that remains supple even in freezing temperatures. Better grip on snow, ice and cold road surfaces. Mandatory in many European countries during winter months.

All-season tires
A compromise between summer and winter. Suitable for moderate use all year round, but less optimal in extreme conditions.

Tire storage at Autobest

Do you switch between summer and winter tires each season? Then you can have your tires stored with us. This way you have no space problem at home and we store your tires under optimal conditions. When changing seasons, we retrieve your set, check the pressure and tread depth, and install them for you.

When should your tires be replaced?

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, but for optimal safety we recommend replacement at 3 mm. In addition, there are other signs that replacement is necessary:

• Uneven wear (may indicate incorrect alignment)
• Cracks or damage in the sidewall
• Tires older than 6 years (even with few kilometers)
• Bulges or protrusions in the tire
