It's true: the Netherlands doesn't have severe winters every year. Yet winter tires are more than just handy in snow. They perform better at temperatures below 7 degrees and offer significantly more grip on wet, cold roads – something you often encounter in autumn and winter.
Have you ever been surprised by a sudden snow shower or frozen roads early in the morning? Then you know how valuable good winter tires are. Moreover, winter tires are mandatory in many European countries during certain periods. Do you regularly travel to Germany, Austria or Switzerland? Then you can't avoid them.
An alternative is all-season tires, which perform reasonably well all year round. They're a compromise between summer and winter tires and suitable for motorists who don't expect extreme weather conditions. Yet real winter tires remain superior in grip and safety during cold, wet and slippery conditions.
Winter tires are specially designed for cold weather and slippery conditions. The difference lies in two things:
Special tread pattern
Winter tires have a coarser tread with extra sipes (small notches) and drainage channels. This means water, snow and mud are drained faster and the tire maintains better grip on the road surface.
Softer rubber compound
The rubber of winter tires remains supple at low temperatures, while summer tires become harder and offer less grip. This ensures a shorter braking distance and better steering feel on cold roads.
Note: precisely because winter tires are softer, they wear faster if you continue using them in summer. Moreover, your braking distance on dry, warm road surfaces is longer than with summer tires. That's why we always recommend switching back to summer tires in time.

As a rule of thumb: change from summer to winter tires in October and back again in March or April. But of course it also depends on the weather and your personal preferences. Is it getting cold early? Then you can also stop by in September. Is the winter mild? Then you can wait a bit longer.
